Symbio frequently encounters similar needs among its customers wishing to develop or refurbish a control room. We have therefore decided to develop a range of consoles that would meet these needs.

The console line is named SymFlex and we now manufacture, assemble and install SymFlex models at our customers premises.

Our goals

The SymFlex console line has been designed to

  • optimally cover the typical needs of our customers
  • comply with all applicable ergonomic standards
  • maximize flexibility:
    • the consoles must be modular and configurable, without generating major production overheads
    • the materials and colors used must be easily adjustable to meet the needs specific to our customers, for example to provide a pleasant look & feel in line with the customer brand
  • provide a range of consoles that allow our customers to achieve identical look & feel and operational and maintenance functionalities within a single control room or across multiple rooms, in order to carry a strong and consistent customer image and brand
  • be manufacturable using techniques, machines and tools mastered by our main suppliers (sheet metal, carpentry, painting, screws, etc.)
  • minimize production costs and therefore purchasing costs

The SymFlex console line

Early steps

The SymFlex line of consoles is the result of the evolution and systematization of individual consoles that we have designed and provided to our customers over the years, realizing that this type of console meets needs that are regularly encountered and that it made sense to create a regular product line. In 2012, for example, we had produced a console for the alarm center of the University of Liege which already had the typical characteristics of the SymFlex line. These notably include a curvilinear layout and a sophisticated and flexible positioning system for the screens at the back of the console.

Based on this first successful achievement, we have developed the concept into a generic and highly flexible console line. The SymFlex console line meets the modularity and parametrizability capabilities we want to provide to our customers.

  • consoles of different widths can be easily built through the assembly of several modules
  • the console radius of curvature can be changed easily, the console features remaining unchanged.

Flexibility extends to most features of the consoles, to meet a wide range of our clients' needs

Curvilinear shape

SymFlex consoles are curvilinear in shape.

This helps reducing the distance between the user and the displays on the lateral sides and reduce the angle with which these displays are perceived. This makes their content more readable and reduces eyes fatigue. More content is seen from the same spot. The same idea is found in curved monitors which are now commonplace in many work settings.

On large curvilinear consoles sporting 2, 3 or more operators the curvilinear pattern significantly improves lateral user interactions, verbal and nonverbal, especially between distant users

Fully flexible positioning of the displays

SymFlex provides fully flexible positioning of any type of display on the back circular display plane.

All displays are attached to variable lengths poles.

The poles can be positioned anywhere on the lateral axis at the back of the console.

Any type of display can be used

The display poles support any type of display and aspect ratio below 55" displays and more than one display can be stacked on a single pole.

The displays can be attached at any vertical position on the poles.

Console legs and cabling

The console legs can be placed anywhere under the modules, typically though between two modules.

Removable doors and tablets provide easy access to the console technical cabinets, in the legs and console main body.

The console legs provide passage for power and data cables from the technical floor, to the equipment and displays on the console

Adjustable height

Adjustable height SymFlex consoles can also be provided. In this case, they are motioned by electric jacks in the console legs.
