Design and manufacture of a functional prototype of the CASCADe ship bridge

SYMBIO designs and manufactures a fully working prototype of the ship bridge developed in the CASCADe European project. The prototype will be installed by SYMBIO at Raytheon-Anschutz facilities in Kiel (DE), where it will then be equiped. Evaluations with professional seafarers will then be conducted to assess the validity and quality of the innovations developed during the 3 years project: the shared display, and its Perspective Editor/Display (Raytheon-Anschutz), the portable pilot unit (PPU, Marimatech) and the physical bridge itself (SYMBIO).


CASCADe is a European project (7th Framework Program) in the maritime domain to which SYMBIO participates, along other international partners: OFFIS (DE), Raytheon-Anschutz (DE), BMT (UK), Cardiff University (UK), Marimatech (DK) and the Mastermind Group (CY). The goal of CASCADe is to develop an adaptive ship bridge, relying on model-based design approaches. In CASCADe, the bridge is also seen as a cooperative human-machine system, and one of the aims is therefore to better support human-human and human-machine cooperation. To achieve these goals, CASCADe has designed and developed a touchable shared display that allow users to share information, make annotations, prepare navigation and solve problems cooperatively (software by Raytheon). CASCADe also brings in a portable pilot unit (PPU) developed by Marimatech that allows the pilot and master to better collaborate and exchange information. Finally an innovative physical console has been developped by SYMBIO to integrate all equipment and provide adaptiveness through height adjustment possibilities notably. Sophisticated dynamic models of the bridge, including cognitive models, are used to support the design process (OFFIS and BMT). The designs are analyzed in dedicated evaluation campains, led by the Cardiff University.
