SYMBIO and a series of international partners are selected by the EC for the CASCADe project

The “Model-based Cooperative and Adaptive Ship-based Context Aware Design (CASCADe)" project, submitted to the European Commission (FP7, Transport) by OFFIS, SYMBIO, BMT, Raytheon Anschuetz, University of Cardiff, Marimatech et Mastermind Shipmanagement has been selected for execution.


CASCADe will aim at developing, demonstrating and evaluating a new method for adaptive ship bridge (ABS) design. The bridge will be seen as a cooperative human-machine system. The methodology will integrate and develop the techniques and tools needed to harmonize the design and development of the bridge, from a functional and physical point of view, in a global, integrated, affordable and human-centered perspective.


The adaptiveness of the bridge will be provided through the different elements of the cooperative human-machine system, and in particular the human-machine interfaces (HMI). The bridge will automatically adapt the information provided to human operators, based on the voyage phases and the circumstances. A virtual platform (virtual simulation) and a physical platform (real, physical simulation of the bridge) will be developed and implemented in the framework of the project to perform the experiments needed for the adaptive bridge development. A new console will be produced by SYMBIO and used as a demonstrator.


The project will start on January 1, 2013, for a duration of 3 years, until end of December 2015. Symbio will be in charge of or involved in:

  • the definition of operational scenarios
  • the definition of the methodology for ship bridge design
  • the study and design of the adaptive bridge (Work Package leader)
  • the design, manufacture and installation of a console prototype (demonstrator)
  • the evaluation of the new adaptive bridge.
